On this coming Sunday the pre-Lenten season of Shrovetide begins. A voluntary fast in preparation for the Lenten season may be initiated in Septuagesima. A 70 day Lenten fast concluding in Easter week may also begin on Septuagesima Sunday. Following the theme of the 70 years of Babylonian captivity, this is a penitential season. We will no longer hear “Allelulia” until the day of Our Lord’s Resurrection.
Anglicans following the Prayer Book still observe this season.
