“And I send the promise of my Father upon you. But stay you in the city till you be endued with power from on high.”

The Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St. Luke 24:49

The novena in honor of the Holy Spirit is the oldest of all novenas since it was first made at the direction of Our Lord Himself when He sent His apostles back to Jerusalem to await the coming of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost. It is still the only novena officially prescribed by the Church.

Act of Consecration to the Holy Spirit

On my knees before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, I offer myself, soul and body to You, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the brightness of Your purity, the unerring keenness of Your justice, and the might of Your love. You are the Strength and Light of my soul. In You I live and move and am. I desire never to grieve You by unfaithfulness to grace and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against You. Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch for Your light, and listen to Your voice, and follow Your gracious inspirations. I cling to You and give myself to You and ask You, by Your compassion to watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus and looking at His Five Wounds, and trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart, I implore You, Adorable Spirit, Helper of my infirmity, to keep me in Your grace that I may never sin against You. Give me grace, O Holy Spirit, Spirit of the Father and the Son to say to You always and everywhere, “Speak Lord for Your servant heareth.” Amen.

To be recited daily during the Novena

PRAYER FOR THE SEVEN GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

O Lord Jesus Christ Who, before ascending into heaven did promise to send the Holy Spirit to finish Your work in the souls of Your Apostles and Disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me that He may perfect in my soul, the work of Your grace and Your love. Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal, the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of Your divine truth, the Spirit of Counsel that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining heaven, the Spirit of Fortitude that I may bear my cross with You and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation, the Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints, the Spirit of Piety that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable, and the Spirit of Fear that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God and may dread in any way to displease Him. Mark me, dear Lord, with the sign of Your true disciples and animate me in all things with Your Spirit. Amen.

Novena for Ascension Thursday (concludes May 29) Saturday, May 3 2014

Ascension Day

They therefore who were come together, asked him, saying: Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?  But he said to them: It is not for you to know the times or moments, which the Father hath put in his own power:  But you shall receive the power of the Holy Ghost coming upon you, and you shall be witnesses unto me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and even to the uttermost part of the earth.  And when he had said these things, while they looked on, he was raised up: and a cloud received him out of their sight.  And while they were beholding him going up to heaven, behold two men stood by them in white garments. Who also said: Ye men of Galilee, why stand you looking up to heaven? This Jesus who is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come, as you have seen him going into heaven.

Seven Days Novena to the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Begin April 5. Friday, Apr 4 2014

Seven Days Novena

The Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Mater dolorosa

Pray one Sorrow each Day

First Day

The first sorrow:

The Prophecy of Simeon (St. Luke 2:22-35)

And after the days of her purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they carried him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord:

Ave

Maria…

And behold there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Ghost was in him.  And he had received an answer from the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.

Ave

Maria…

And he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when his parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, he also took him into his arms, and blessed God.

Ave

Maria…

Et dixit: Nunc dimittis servum tuum Domine secundum verbum tuum in pace; Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum, Quod parasti ante faciem omnium populorum: Lumen ad revelationem gentium et gloriam plebis tuae Israhel.

And he said: Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace; Because my eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples: A light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

Ave

Maria…

And his father and mother were wondering at those things which were spoken concerning him.

Ave

Maria

Et benedixit illis Symeon et dixit ad Mariam matrem eius ecce positus est hic in ruinam et resurrectionem multorum in Israhel et in signum cui contradicetur;

And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother: Behold this child is set for the fall, and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted;

Ave

Maria…

And thine own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed.

Ave

Maria…

And his mother kept all these words in her heart.

V.Mater cruci corde affixa,

R. ora pro nobis.

V. Mother crucified in heart,

R. pray for us.

Second Day

The second sorrow:

The Flight into Egypt (St. Matthew 2: 13-21

And after they were departed, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph,

Ave

Maria…

Saying: Arise, and take the child and his mother, and fly into Egypt: and be there until I shall tell thee. For it will come to pass that Herod will seek the child to destroy him.

Ave

Maria…

Who arose, and took the child and his mother by night, and retired into Egypt: and he was there until the death of Herod:

Ave

Maria…

Tunc Herodes videns quoniam inlusus esset a magis iratus est.

Then Herod perceiving that he was deluded by the wise men, was exceeding angry.

Ave

Maria…

Valde et mittens occidit omnes pueros qui erant in Bethleem et in omnibus finibus eius a bimatu et infra secundum tempus quod exquisierat a magis.

And sending killed all the men children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

Ave

Maria

Defuncto autem Herode ecce apparuit angelus Domini in somnis Ioseph in Aegypto,

But when Herod was dead, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph in Egypt,

Ave

Maria…

Saying: Arise, and take the child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel. For they are dead that sought the life of the child.

Who arose, and took the child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

Ave

Maria…

And his mother kept all these words in her heart.

V. Mater cruci corde affixa,

R. ora pro nobis.

V. Mother crucified in heart,

R. pray for us.

Third Day

The third sorrow:

The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple (St. Luke 2:41-50)

And his parents went every year to Jerusalem, at the solemn day of the pasch. And when he was twelve years old, they going up into Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast,

Ave

Maria…

And having fulfilled the days, when they returned, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not.

Ave

Maria…

And thinking that he was in the company, they came a day’s journey,

                                                                     Ave

Maria…

And sought him among their kinsfolks and acquaintance.  And not finding him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking him.

Ave

Maria…

Et factum est post triduum invenerunt illum in templo sedentem in medio doctorum audientem illos et interrogantem.

And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them, and asking them questions.

Ave

Maria…

And his mother said to him: Son, why hast thou done so to us? Behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

Ave

Maria…

And his mother said to him: Son, why hast thou done so to us? Behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

Ave

Maria…

And he said to them: How is it that you sought me? Did you not know, that I must be about my father’s business? And they understood not the word that he spoke unto them.

Ave

Maria…

And his mother kept all these words in her heart.

V.Mater cruci corde affixa,

R. ora pro nobis.

V. Mother crucified in heart,

R. pray for us.

The fourth sorrow:  Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to Calvary (St. John 19: 16-17; St. Luke 23: 26-32)

Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him forth. And bearing his own cross, he went forth to that place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha.

Ave

Maria…

And as they led him away, they laid hold of one Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country; and they laid the cross on him to carry after Jesus.

Ave

Maria…

And there followed him a great multitude of people, and of women, who bewailed and lamented him.

Ave

Maria…

But Jesus turning to them, said: Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not over me; but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

Ave

Maria…

For behold, the days shall come, wherein they will say: Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the paps that have not given suck.

Ave

Maria

Tunc incipient dicere montibus: Cadite super nos; et collibus:  Operite nos.

Then shall they begin to say to the mountains: Fall upon us; and to the hills: Cover us.

Ave

Maria…

A si in viridi ligno haec faciunt in arido quid fiet?

For if in the green wood they do these things, what shall be done in the dry?

Ave

Maria…

And his mother kept all these words in her heart.

V. Mater cruci corde affixa,

R. ora pro nobis.

V. Mother crucified in heart,

R. pray for us.

The fifth sorrow:  Jesus Dies on the Cross. (St. John 19:17-19; 25-27; 30 )

Et baiulans sibi crucem, exivit in eum qui dicitur Calvariae locum hebraice Golgotha.

And bearing his own cross, he went forth to that place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha.

Ave

Maria…

Where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the midst.

Ave

Maria…

And Pilate wrote a title also, and he put it upon the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Ave

Maria…

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen.

Ave

Maria…

Cum vidisset ergo Iesus matrem et discipulum stantem quem diligebat, dicit matri suae: Mulier, ecce filius tuus.

When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, he saith to his mother: Woman, behold thy son.

Ave

Maria

Deinde dicit discipulo:  Ecce mater tua.

After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own.

Ave

Maria…

Jesus therefore, when he had taken the vinegar, said: It is consummated. And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost.

Ave

Maria…

Mulier, ecce filius tuus.

Woman, behold thy son.

V. Mater cruci corde affixa,

R. ora pro nobis.

V. Mother crucified in heart,

R. pray for us.

The sixth sorrow:  Mary Receives the Body of Jesus in Her Arms. (St. John 19: 31-34; 36-40)

Then the Jews (because it was the parasceve) that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath day, (for that was a great sabbath day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

Ave

Maria…

The soldiers therefore came; and they broke the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him. But after they were come to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.

Ave

Maria…

But one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side, and immediately there came out blood and water.

Ave

Maria…

For these things were done, that the scripture might be fulfilled: You shall not break a bone of him. And again another scripture saith: They shall look on him whom they pierced

Ave

Maria…
And after these things, Joseph of Arimathea (because he was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews) besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave leave.

Ave

Maria

He came therefore, and Nicodemus also came, (he who at the first came to Jesus by night,) bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

Ave

Maria…

They took therefore the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths, with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

Ave

           Maria…

Mulier, ecce filius tuus.

Woman, behold thy son.

V. Mater cruci corde affixa,

R. ora pro nobis.

V. Mother crucified in heart,

           R. pray for us.

The seventh sorrow: The Body of Jesus Is Placed in the Tomb.

(St. John 19:41-42, St. Matthew: 27:60, St. Luke 23: 54-56)

Now there was in the place where he was crucified, a garden.

Ave

Maria…

Et in horto monumentum novum, in quo nondum quisquam positus erat.

And in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein no man yet had been laid.

Ave

Maria…

Ibi ergo propter parasceven Iudaeorum quia iuxta erat monumentum posuerunt Iesum.

There, therefore, because of the parasceve of the Jews, they laid Jesus, because the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

Ave

Maria…

And he rolled a great stone to the door of the monument, and went his way.

Ave

Maria…

Dies erat parasceves et sabbatum inlucescebat

And it was the day of the Parasceve, and the sabbath drew on.

Ave

Maria

And the women that were come with him from Galilee, following after, saw the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

Ave

Maria…

Et revertentes paraverunt aromata et unguenta et sabbato quidem siluerunt secundum mandatum.

And returning, they prepared spices and ointments; and on the sabbath day they rested, according to the commandment.

Ave

Maria…

Merry Christmas! Christmas Novena and Antiphons for Advent Tuesday, Dec 17 2013

Lo, how a rose e’er blooming

Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming (in English)

Angels We Have Heard on High

What Child is This?

Vespers for Christmas

Christmas Novena

Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold.  In that hour, vouchsafe, Oh my God, to hear my prayers and grant my desires, through the merits of Our Saviour, Jesus Christ, and of His blessed mother.  Amen.

(It is piously believed that whoever recites the above prayers fifteen times a day from the feast of St. Andrew (30th November) until Christmas will obtained what is asked.)

Imprimatur+Michael Augustine, Archbishop of New York, February 6, 1897

Alma Redemptoris Mater

Mother of Christ, hear thou thy people’s cry, Star of the deep and Portal of the sky! Mother of Him who thee made from nothing made. Sinking we strive and call to thee for aid: Oh, by what joy which Gabriel brought to thee, Thou Virgin first and last, let us thy mercy see.

Tempus Adventus During Advent

V. Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae.

R. Et concepit de Spiritu Sancto.

V. The Angel of the Lord announced unto Mary.

R. And she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Oremus. Amen.

Let us pray. Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts: that as we have known the incarnation of Thy Son Jesus Christ by the message of an Angel, so too by His Cross and passion may we be brought to the glory of His resurrection. Amen.

Donec Purificatio From Christmas Eve until the Purification

V. Post partum, Virgo, inviolata permansisti.

R. Dei Genetrix, intercede pro nobis.

V. After childbirth thou didst remain a virgin.

R. Intercede for us, O Mother of God.

Oremus. Deus, qui salutis aeternae, beatae Mariae virginitate fecunda, humano generi praemia praestitisti: tribue, quaesumus; ut ipsam pro nobis intercedere sentiamus, per quammeruimus auctorem vitae suscipere, Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum, Filium tuum. Amen.

Let us pray. Oh, God, who, by the fruitful virginity of blessed Mary, hast bestowed upon mankind the reward of eternal salvation: grant, we beseech Thee, that we mayexperience her intercession, through whom we have been made worthy to receive the author of life, our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son. Novena for the Assumption of Mary into Heaven Tuesday, Aug 7 2012

Novena for the Feast of the Assumption

Prayers of Thanksgiving for Our Lady’s Assumption.

i. 300 Days, once a day. ii. Plenary, once a month. I, II, IV. (See Instructions, p. i.) 5 Pius VII, Mem. July 19,

1822

 *

Adore the eternal FATHER with a PATER, Ave, and Gloria ; then say,

I ADORE Thee, Eternal FATHER, my LORD and my GOD, in union with all the heavenly host, rendering Thee infinite thanks for every grace and favour Thou hast granted to Mary, most holy Virgin, thy wellbeloved daughter, and, above all, for that height of power to which Thou didst exalt her by her Assumption into heaven.

Adore the Eternal SON with a PATER, Ave, and Gloria ; then say I ADORE Thee too, Eternal SON, my GOD, my LORD, and my REDEEMER, in union with all the heavenly host, rendering Thee infinite thanks for every grace and favour Thou hast granted to Mary, Virgin most blessed, thy well-beloved Mother, and, above all, for the gift of highest wisdom with which Thou didst glorify her on her Assumption into heaven.

 *

Adore the HOLY GHOST with a PATER, Ave, and Gloria ; then say,

I ADORE Thee also, O HOLY GHOST, the PARACLETE, my GOD and my LORD, and in union with all the heavenly host I render Thee infinite thanks for every grace and favour Thou hast granted to the most blessed Virgin, thy most loving Spouse, and, above all, for that most perfect and divine charity with which Thou didst inflame her most holy and most pure heart in the act of her most glorious Assumption into heaven. In the name of thy most chaste Spouse, I humbly beg of Thee to grant me the grace of remission of all my most grievous sins which I have committed from the first moment when I was able to sin until this day, for all of which I grieve exceedingly, firmly purposing rather to die than ever again offend thy Divine Majesty; and relying on the high merits and most powerful protection of this thy most loving Spouse, I beg of Thee to grant me the most precious gift of thy grace and Divine love, by vouchsafing me those lights and special helps whereby thy eternal providence has determined to will my salvation, and to bring me to Thyself.

 *

Then say three times,

HOLY Mary, all ye holy men and women, saints of GOD, intercede for us to our LORD, that we may merit his help and be saved. Amen.

 To the Most Blessed Virgin.

I ACKNOWLEDGE thee and I venerate thee, most holy Virgin, Queen of Heaven, Lady and Mistress of the Universe, as Daughter of the Eternal FATHER, Mother of his well-beloved SON, and most loving Spouse of the HOLY SPIRIT. Kneeling at the feet of thy great Majesty, with all humility I pray thee, through that divine charity with which thou wast so bounteously enriched on thy Assumption into heaven, to vouchsafe me favour and pity, placing me under thy most safe and faithful protection, and receiving me into the number of thy happy and highly-favoured servants. Deign, Mother and Lady most tender, to accept my miserable heart, memory, will, powers, and senses, internal and external; govern them all in conformity to the good pleasure of thy Divine Son, as I intend by my every thought and deed to give thee glory and honour. And, by that wisdom with which thy well-beloved Son glorified thee, I pray and beseech thee to obtain for me light that I may clearly know myself and my own nothingness, and in particular my sins, that so I may hate and loathe them ; and that I may discern the snares of the infernal enemy, and all his modes of attack, whether open or hidden. Above all, most tender Mother, I beg of thee the grace of N.

*

Say three times, Virgin of all virgins,

To thy shelter take us, Gentlest of the gentle, Chaste and gentle make us.

Let us pray.

PARDON, O LORD, we beseech Thee, the sins of thy servants; that we, who of our own actions know not how to please Thee, may be saved by the intercession of the Mother of thy SON, our LORD. Through the same CHRIST our LORD. Amen. May the almighty and merciful LORD, FATHER, SON, and HOLY GHOST, bless and preserve us. Amen.

O GLORIOSA virginum Sublimis inter sidera,

Qui te creavit parvulum Lactente nutris ubere.

O QUEEN of all the virgin choir, Enthroned above the starry sky;

Who with pure milk from thy own breast Thy own CREATOR didst supply.

Quod Heva tristis abstulit Tu reddis almo germine:

Intrent ut astra flebiles, Cæli recludis cardines.

What man hath lost in hapless Eve, Thy sacred womb to man restores;

Thou to the sorrowing here beneath Hast opened heaven’s eternal doors.

Tu regis alti janua, Et aula lucis fulgida:

Vitam datam per Virginem Gentes redemptae plaudite.

Hail, O refulgent Hall of Light! Hail, Gate sublime of Heaven’s high King!

Through Thee redeemed to endless life, Thy praise let all the nations sing.

Amen.

O JESU, born of Virgin bright Immortal glory be to Thee; Praise to the FATHER infinite, And HOLY GHOST eternally.

Amen.
