Let us pray:
O God, in Thine ineffable Providence, Thou wert pleased to choose Blessed Joseph to be the spouse of Thy most Holy Mother. Grant, we beseech Thee, that we may be worthy to have him for our intercessor in heaven, whom on earth we venerate as our Protector; Thou who livest and reignest forever and ever. Amen.

A reading from the Gospel of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, according to St. Luke 8: 4-15

 

Cum autem turba plurima convenirent, et de civitatibus properarent ad eum, dixit per similitudinem:

Exiit qui seminat, seminare semen suum. Et dum seminat, aliud cecidit secus viam, et conculcatum est, et volucres caeli comederunt illud.

Et aliud cecidit supra petrum: et natum aruit, quia non habebat humorem.

 

At that time, when a very great multitude was gathered together and hastened out of the cities unto Jesus, He spoke by a similitude:
The sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the way side. And it was trodden down: and the fowls of the air devoured it.
And other some fell upon a rock. And as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.

Et aliud cecidit inter spinas, et simul exortae spinae suffocaverunt illud.

Et aliud cecidit in terram bonam: et ortum fecit fructum centuplum. Haec dicens clamabat: Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat. Interrogabant autem eum discipuli ejus, quae esset haec parabola. Quibus ipse dixit: Vobis datum est nosse mysterium regni Dei, ceteris autem in parabolis: ut videntes non videant, et audientes non intelligant.

 

And other some fell among thorns. And the thorns growing up with it, choked it.
And other some fell upon good ground and, being sprung up, yielded fruit a hundredfold. Saying these things, he cried out: He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
And his disciples asked him what this parable might be.
To whom he said: To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to the rest in parables, that seeing they may not see and hearing may not understand.

Est autem haec parabola: Semen est verbum Domini.

Qui autem secus viam, hi sunt qui audiunt: deinde venit diabolus, et tollit verbum de corde eorum, ne credentes salvi fiant.

Nam qui supra petram, qui cum audierint, cum gaudio suscipiunt verbum: et hi radices non habent: qui ad tempus credunt, et in tempore tentationis recedunt.

Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
And they by the way side are they that hear: then the devil cometh and taketh the word out of their heart, lest believing they should be saved.
Now they upon the rock are they who when they hear receive the word with joy: and these have no roots: for they believe for a while and in time of temptation they fall away.

Quod autem in spinas cecidit: hi sunt qui audierunt, et a sollicitudinibus, et divitiis, et voluptatibus vitae euntes, suffocantur, et non referunt fructum. Quod autem in bonam terram: hi sunt qui in corde bono et optimo audientes verbum retinent, et fructum afferunt in patientia.

And that which fell among thorns are they who have heard and, going their way, are choked with the cares and riches and pleasures of this life and yield no fruit.
But that on the good ground are they who in a good and perfect heart, hearing the word, keep it and bring forth fruit in patience.

IN illo tempore, dixit Iesus: Simile est regnum caelorum homini patrifamilias, qui exiit primo mane conducere operarios in vineam suam.  Conventione autem facta cum operariis ex denario diurno, misit eos in vineam suam.Et egressus circa horam tertiam, vidit alios stantes in foro otiosos.

Et dixit illis: Ite et vos in vineam meam, et quod justum fuerit dabo vobis.

Illi autem abierunt. Iterum autem exiit circa sextam et nonam horam: et fecit similiter.Circa undecimam vero exiit, et invenit alios stantes, et dicit illis: Quid hic statis tota die otiosi? Dicunt ei: Quia nemo nos conduxit. Dicit illis: Ite et vos in vineam meam.Cum sero autem factum esset, dicit dominus vineae procuratori suo: Voca operarios, et redde illis mercedem incipiens a novissimis usque ad primos. Cum venissent ergo qui circa undecimam horam venerant, acceperunt singulos denarios.Venientes autem et primi, arbitrati sunt quod plus essent accepturi: acceperunt autem et ipsi singulos denarios.Et accipientes murmurabant adversus patremfamilias, dicentes:Hi novissimi una hora fecerunt, et pares illos nobis fecisti, qui portavimus pondus diei, et aestus. At ille respondens uni eorum, dixit:Amice, non facio tibi injuriam: nonne ex denario convenisti mecum? Tolle quod tuum est, et vade: volo autem et huic novissimo dare sicut et tibi.  Aut non licet mihi quod volo, facere? an oculus tuus nequam est, quia ego bonus sum?

Sic erunt novissimi primi, et primi novissimi. Multi enim sunt vocati, pauci vero electi.

 

 

AT that time Jesus said: The kingdom of God is like to a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers in his vineyard.
And having agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing in the marketplace idle.
And he said to them: Go you also into my vineyard, and I will give you what shall be just.
And they went their way. And again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did in like manner.
But about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing, and he saith to them: Why stand you here all the day idle?
They say to him: Because no man hath hired us. He saith to them: Go ye also into my vineyard.
And when evening was come, the lord of the vineyard saith to his steward: Call the labourers and pay them their hire, beginning from the last even to the first.
When therefore they were come that came about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
But when the first also came, they thought that they should receive more: And they also received every man a penny.
And receiving it they murmured against the master of the house,
Saying: These last have worked but one hour. and thou hast made them equal to us, that have borne the burden of the day and the heats.
But he answering said to one of them: friend, I do thee no wrong: didst thou not agree with me for a penny?
Take what is thine, and go thy way: I will also give to this last even as to thee.
Or, is it not lawful for me to do what I will? Is thy eye evil, because I am good?

So shall the last be first and the first last. For many are called but few chosen.

 

 

Septuagesima–Shrovetide Monday, Feb 10 2014

On this coming Sunday the pre-Lenten season of Shrovetide begins.  A voluntary fast in preparation for the Lenten season may be initiated in Septuagesima. A 70 day Lenten fast concluding in Easter week may also begin on Septuagesima Sunday.  Following the theme of the 70 years of Babylonian captivity, this is a penitential season.  We will no longer hear “Allelulia” until the day of Our Lord’s Resurrection.

Anglicans following the Prayer Book still observe this season.

PRECES populi tui,quaesumus, Domine, clementer exaudi:
ut, qui iuste pro peccatis nostris affligimur,
pro tui nominis gloria misericorditer liberemur.

 

 

O LORD, we beseech thee favourably to hear the prayers of thy people;

that we, who are justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered for the glory of thy name.

A CUNCTIS nos, quaesumus, Domine, mentis et corporis defende periculis: et intercedente beata et gloriosa semperque Virgine Dei Genitrice Maria, cum beatis Apostolis tuis Petro et Paulo, atque beato N., et omnibus Sanctis, salutem nobis tribue benignus et pacem: ut destructis adversitatibus et erroribus universis, Ecclesia tua secura tibi serviat libertate.

PRESERVE us, O Lord, we beseech thee, from all dangers of soul and body: and by the intercession of the glorious and blessed Mary, the ever Virgin-Mother of God, of the blessed Apostles, Peter and Paul, of Blessed N. and of all the Saints, grant us, in thy mercy, health and peace; that all adversities and errors being removed, thy Church may serve thee with undisturbed liberty.
