A reading from the Book of Jeremiah  18: 18-23

 Et dixerunt venite et cogitemus contra Hieremiam cogitationes non enim peribit lex a sacerdote neque consilium a sapiente nec sermo a propheta venite et percutiamus eum lingua et non adtendamus ad universos sermones eius,  Adtende Domine ad me et audi vocem adversariorum meorum.  Numquid redditur pro bono malum quia foderunt foveam animae meae recordare quod steterim in conspectu tuo ut loquerer pro eis bonum et averterem indignationem tuam ab eis.

Propterea da filios eorum in famem et deduc eos in manus gladii fiant uxores eorum absque liberis et viduae et viri earum interficiantur morte iuvenes eorum confodiantur gladio in proelio.  Audiatur clamor de domibus eorum adduces enim super eos latronem repente quia foderunt foveam ut caperent me et laqueos absconderunt pedibus meis.  Tu autem Domine scis omne consilium eorum adversum me in mortem ne propitieris iniquitati eorum et peccatum eorum a facie tua non deleatur fiant corruentes in conspectu tuo in tempore furoris tui abutere eis.

And they said: Come, and let us invent devices against Jeremias: for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet: come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and let us give no heed to all his words. Give heed to me, O Lord, and hear the voice of my adversaries. Shall evil be rendered for good, because they have digged a pit for my soul? Remember that I have stood in thy sight, so speak good for them, and turn away thy indignation from them. Therefore deliver up their children to famine, and bring them into the hands of the sword: let their wives be bereaved of children and widows: and let their husbands be slain by death: let their young men be stabbed with the sword in battle. Let a cry be heard out of their houses: for thou shalt bring the robber upon them suddenly: because they have digged a pit to take me, and have hid snares for my feet. But thou, O Lord, knowest all their counsel against me unto death: forgive not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from thy sight: let them be overthrown before thy eyes, in the time of thy wrath do thou destroy them.

A reading from the Gospel of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, according to St. John  12: 10-36

 

 

Cogitaverunt autem principes sacerdotum ut et Lazarum interficerent. Quia multi propter illum abibant ex Iudaeis et credebant in Iesum. In crastinum autem turba multa quae venerat ad diem festum cum audissent quia venit Iesus Hierosolyma.  Acceperunt ramos palmarum et processerunt obviam ei et clamabant:  Osanna benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini, rex Israhel.  Et invenit Iesus asellum et sedit super eum sicut scriptum est: Noli timere, filia Sio:. Ecce rex tuus venit sedens super pullum asinae.

Haec non cognoverunt discipuli eius primum sed quando glorificatus est Iesus, tunc recordati sunt quia haec erant scripta de eo et haec fecerunt ei. Testimonium ergo perhibebat turba, quae erat cum eo quando Lazarum vocavit de monumento et suscitavit eum a mortuis. Propterea et obviam venit ei turba quia audierunt eum fecisse hoc signum.  Pharisaei ergo dixerunt ad semet ipsos videtis quia nihil proficimus? Ecce mundus totus post eum abiit.   Erant autem gentiles quidam ex his qui ascenderant ut adorarent in die festo.

Hii ergo accesserunt ad Philippum qui erat a Bethsaida Galilaeae et rogabant eum dicentes: domine volumus Iesum videre.  Venit Philippus et dicit Andreae, Andreas rursum et Philippus dixerunt Iesu. Iesus autem respondit eis dicens:  Venit hora ut clarificetur Filius hominis.  Amen, amen dico vobis: Nisi granum frumenti cadens in terram mortuum fuerit.   Ipsum solum manet si autem mortuum fuerit multum fructum adfert qui amat animam suam perdet eam et qui odit animam suam in hoc mundo in vitam aeternam custodit eam.

Si quis mihi ministrat me sequatur et ubi sum ego illic et minister meus erit si quis mihi ministraverit honorificabit eum Pater meus.  Nunc anima mea turbata est et quid dicam Pater salvifica me ex hora hac sed propterea veni in horam hanc.  Pater clarifica tuum nomen venit ergo vox de caelo et clarificavi et iterum clarificabo.  Turba ergo quae stabat et audierat dicebant tonitruum factum esse alii dicebant angelus ei locutus est.  Respondit Iesus et dixit: non propter me vox haec venit, sed propter vos.

Nunc iudicium est mundi nunc princeps huius mundi eicietur foras.  Et ego si exaltatus fuero a terra omnia traham ad me ipsum.  Hoc autem dicebat significans qua morte esset moriturus.  Respondit ei turba nos audivimus ex lege quia Christus manet in aeternum et quomodo tu dicis oportet exaltari Filium hominis?  Quis est iste Filius hominis?  Dixit ergo eis Iesus:  Adhuc modicum lumen in vobis est ambulate dum lucem habetis ut non tenebrae vos conprehendant et qui ambulat in tenebris nescit quo vadat.  Dum lucem habetis credite in lucem ut filii lucis sitis haec locutus est Iesus et abiit et abscondit se ab eis.

But the chief priests thought to kill Lazarus also: Because many of the Jews, by reason of him, went away and believed in Jesus. And on the next day, a great multitude that was come to the festival day, when they had heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, Took branches of palm trees and went forth to meet him and cried:  Hosanna. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel. And Jesus found a young ass and sat upon it, as it is written: Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold thy king cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt. These things his disciples did not know at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of him and that they had done these things to him. The multitude therefore gave testimony, which was with him, when he called Lazarus out of the grave and raised him from the dead. For which reason also the people came to meet him, because they heard that he had done this miracle. The Pharisees therefore said among themselves: Do you see that we prevail nothing? Behold, the whole world is gone after him. Now there were certain Gentiles among them, who came up to adore on the festival day. These therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying: Sir, we would see Jesus. Philip cometh and telleth Andrew. Again Andrew and Philip told Jesus. But Jesus answered them, saying: The hour is come that the Son of man should be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falling into the ground die, Itself remaineth alone. But if it die it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it and he that hateth his life in this world keepeth it unto life eternal. If any man minister to me, let him follow me: and where I am, there also shall my minister be. If any man minister to me, him will my Father honour. Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this cause I came unto this hour. Father, glorify thy name. A voice therefore came from heaven: I have both glorified it and will glorify it again. The multitude therefore that stood and heard said that it thundered. Others said: An angel spoke to him. Jesus answered and said: This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. Now is the judgment of the world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself. (Now this he said, signifying what death he should die.) The multitude answered him: We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever. And how sayest thou: The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man? Jesus therefore said to them: Yet a little while, the light is among you. Walk whilst you have the light, and the darkness overtake you not. And he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither be goeth. Whilst you have the light, believe in the light, that you may be the children of light. These things Jesus spoke: and he went away and hid himself from them.

EN EGO, O bone et dulcissime JESU, ante conspectum tuum genibus me provolvo, ac maximo animi ardore te oro atque obtestor ut meum in cor vividos fidei, spei, et charitatis sensus, atque veram peccatorum meorum poenitentiam, eaque emendandi firmissimam voluntatem velis imprimere: dum mag-no animi affectu, et dolore tua quinque Vulnera mecum ipse considero, ac mente contemplor, illud præoculis habens, quod jam in ore ponebat tuo David propheta de te, O bone JESU:  Foderunt manus meas et pedes meos; dinumeraverunt omnia ossa mea.  (Ps. xxi, 17, 18.)

O GOOD and sweetest JESUS, before thy face I humbly kneel, and with the greatest fervour of spirit I pray and beseech Thee to vouchsafe to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity, true contrition for my sins, and a most firm purpose of amendment; whilst I ontemplate with great sorrow and affection thy five wounds, and ponder them over in my mind, having before my eyes the words which, long ago, David the prophet spoke in thy own person concerning Thee, my JESUS: They have pierced my hands and my feet; they have numbered all my bones. (Ps. xxi, 17,18.)

O GOD, who, by the Immaculate conception of the Virgin, didst prepare a worthy habitation for thy Son; we beseech Thee that,: as in view of the death of that Son Thou didst preserve her from all stain of sin, so Thou wouldst enable us, being made pure by her intercession, to come unto Thee. Through the same Christ our Lord.

The Prayer.

 

HEART of Mary, Mother of GOD and our Mother, Heart most amiable, on which the adorable Trinity ever gazes with complacency, worthy of all the veneration and tenderness of angels and of men; Heart most like the Heart of JESUS, whose most perfect image thou art; Heart full of goodness, ever compassionate towards our miseries; vouchsafe to thaw our icy hearts, that they may be wholly changed to the likeness of the Heart of JESUS. Infuse into them the love of thy virtues, inflame them with that blessed fire with which thou dost ever burn. In thee let the Holy Church find safe shelter; protect it and be its sweet asylum, its tower of strength, impregnable against every inroad of its enemies. Be thou the road leading to JESUS; be thou the channel whereby we receive all graces needful for our salvation. Be thou our help in need, our comfort in trouble, our strength in temptation, our refuge in persecution, our aid in all dangers ; but especially in the last struggle of our life, at the moment of our death, when all hell shall be unchained against us to snatch away our souls: in that dread moment, that hour so terrible, whereon our eternity depends, ah, then, most tender Virgin, make us feel how great is the tenderness of thy maternal Heart, and how mighty thy power with the Heart of JESUS, opening to us a safe refuge in the very fount of mercy itself, that so we too may join with thee in Paradise in blessing that same Heart of JESUS for ever and for ever. O MY God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. STATION II. JESUS receives his cross.

My Jesus, who by thine own will didst take on Thee the Cross which I made for Thee by my sins ; oh,

make me know the weight of them, and sorrow for them ever while I live.

My Jesus, the heavy burden of my sins has made Thee fall down beneath the Cross. My Jesus, I loathe

them, I detest them, I beseech Thee to pardon them; aided by thy grace, I will never commit them more.

Jesus, most suffering ! Mary, Mother most sorrowful ! if for the past by sin I have caused you pain and

sorrow, yet by divine grace it shall be so no more, but I will love you faithfully until death.

Quis est homo qui non fleret, matrem Christi si videret in tanto supplicio?

STATION V. Simon of Cyrene helps JESUS to carry the Cross.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.

R. Because by thy holy Cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

 

 

My Jesus, happy was that man of Cyrene who aided Thee to bear the Cross. Happy shall I be if I too aid

Thee to bear the Cross, by suffering with patience and goodwill the crosses Thou shalt send me during

life. My Jesus, give me grace to do so.

Bruised, derided, cursed, defiled, she beheld her tender Child All with scourges rent:

 

 

 

STATION VI. JESUS and Veronica.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.

R. Because by thy holy Cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

 

 

Jesus most compassionate, who didst deign to print thy sacred countenance upon the cloth with which

Veronica wiped the sweat from off thy brows; print in my soul deep, I pray Thee, the lasting memory of

Thy most bitter pains.

Vidit suum dulcem Natum moriendo desolatum, dum emisit spiritum.

STATION VII. JESUS falls a second time.

 

 

V. Adoramus Te, Christe, et benedicimus tibi.

R. Quia per sanctam Crucem tuam redemisti mundum.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.

R. Because by thy holy Cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

 

My Jesus, oft have I sinned, and by sin often made Thee fall beneath the Cross. Help me to use such

efficacious means of grace that I may never fall again into sin.

Eia, Mater, fons amoris me sentire vim doloris fac, ut tecum lugeam.

Make me feel as thou hast felt; make my soul to glow and melt with the love of Christ my Lord.

 

 

STATION VIII. JESUS comforts the women of Jerusalem.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.

R. Because by thy holy Cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

 

My Jesus, who didst comfort the pious women of Jerusalem who wept to see Thee so tormented;

comfort my soul with thy mercy, for in thy mercy alone is my trust; oh, may I never frustrate it!

Indulgences: The Stations of the Cross.

Those who perform devoutly the Stations of the Cross may gain all the Indulgences which have ever been granted by Popes to the faithful who visit in person the sacred places in Jerusalem. It is not permitted to specify definitely what these Indulgences are. All, however, who wish to gain them must bear in mind that the Stations must be erected by one who has Faculties, and that it is indispensably required of them to meditate, according to their abilities, on the Passion of our LORD and SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST, and to go from one Station to the other, so far as the number of persons engaged in the devotion, and the space where the fourteen Stations are erected, will admit, and this is all that is required for the Indulgences. Those who are sick, in prison, or at sea, or in parlibus infidelium, or who are prevented in any other way from visiting the Stations erected in churches or public oratories, may gain the said Indulgences by reciting fourteen times Pater noster and Ave Maria, and at the end of these, Pater noster and Ave Maria and Gloria Patri five times, and one Pater, Ave, and Gloria besides, for the Pope, “holding in their hands the while a crucifix ” blessed by the Father-General of the Order of the Friars Minor Observants at the Convent of Ara Coeli, or else by the Father-Provincial or any Father-Guardian, subject of the said Father-General, or any priest with Faculties from the said Father-General. These crucifixes, so indulgenced, after they have been blessed, cannot be sold or given away or lent for the purpose of enabling others to gain the Indulgences of the Stations.

At the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly choir of Archangels, may it please God to grant us the gift of perseverance in the faith and in all good works, that we may thereby be enabled to attain unto the glory of Paradise. Amen.

NINTH SALUTATION. Pater once, Ave thrice, to the Ninth Angelic Choir of Angels.

At the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly choir of Angels, may God vouchsafe to grant that the Holy Angels may protect us during life, and after death may lead us into the everlasting glory of heaven. Amen.

In conclusion, say one Pater noster each in honor of St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Raphael,  our Angel Guardian. Then end with the following Antiphon:

St. Michael the Archangel, glorious Prince, chief and champion of the heavenly host, guardian of the souls of men, conqueror of the rebel angels, who art set over the palace of God, our worthy captain under Jesus Christ, endowed with superhuman excellence and virtue; vouchsafe to free us from every evil, who with full confidence have recourse to thee; and by thy powerful protection enable us to make progress every day in the faithful service of our God.

And after the days of her purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they carried him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord:

The fourth sorrow:  Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to Calvary (St. John 19: 16-17; St. Luke 23: 26-32)

 

 

Tunc ergo tradidit eis illum ut crucifigeretur susceperunt autem Iesum et eduxerunt. Et baiulans sibi crucem exivit in eum qui dicitur Calvariae locum hebraice Golgotha.

 

Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him forth. And bearing his own cross, he went forth to that place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha.

The sixth sorrow:  Mary Receives the Body of Jesus in Her Arms. (St. John 19: 31-34; 36-40)

 

 

 

Iudaei (ergo quoniam parasceve erat) ut non remanerent in cruce corpora sabbato erat, (enim magnus dies ille sabbati) rogaverunt Pilatum ut frangerentur eorum crura, et tollerentur.

Then the Jews (because it was the parasceve) that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath day, (for that was a great sabbath day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

Propterea vos non auditis quia ex Deo non estis.  Responderunt igitur Iudaei et dixerunt ei: Nonne bene dicimus nos quia Samaritanus es tu et daemonium habes?  Respondit Iesus:  Ego daemonium non habeo, sed honorifico Patrem meum. Dixerunt ergo ei Pharisaei tu de te ipso testimonium perhibes testimonium tuum non est verum.  Respondit Iesus et dixit eis et si ego testimonium perhibeo de me ipso verum est testimonium meum quia scio unde veni et quo vado vos autem nescitis unde venio aut quo vado. Vos secundum carnem iudicatis ego non iudico quemquam.

The Prayer.

 

HEART of Mary, Mother of GOD and our Mother, Heart most amiable, on which the adorable Trinity ever gazes with complacency, worthy of all the veneration and tenderness of angels and of men; Heart most like the Heart of JESUS, whose most perfect image thou art; Heart full of goodness, ever compassionate towards our miseries; vouchsafe to thaw our icy hearts, that they may be wholly changed to the likeness of the Heart of JESUS. Infuse into them the love of thy virtues, inflame them with that blessed fire with which thou dost ever burn. In thee let the Holy Church find safe shelter; protect it and be its sweet asylum, its tower of strength, impregnable against every inroad of its enemies. Be thou the road leading to JESUS; be thou the channel whereby we receive all graces needful for our salvation. Be thou our help in need, our comfort in trouble, our strength in temptation, our refuge in persecution, our aid in all dangers ; but especially in the last struggle of our life, at the moment of our death, when all hell shall be unchained against us to snatch away our souls: in that dread moment, that hour so terrible, whereon our eternity depends, ah, then, most tender Virgin, make us feel how great is the tenderness of thy maternal Heart, and how mighty thy power with the Heart of JESUS, opening to us a safe refuge in the very fount of mercy itself, that so we too may join with thee in Paradise in blessing that same Heart of JESUS for ever and for ever. Always be before of our eyes, we beg you, that we understand the Word of God correctly, that we follow, obey and fulfill that which God wants of us. And assist us in staying awake in that hour so that He does not find us asleep. Amen.

 

Saint Gabriel the Archangel, I venerate you as the Angel of the Incarnation, because God  appointed you to bear the messages concerning the God-Man to Daniel, Zechariah, and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Give me a very tender and devoted love for the Incarnate Word and his Blessed Mother. I venerate you also as the “Strength from God” because you are the giver of God’s strength, consoler and comforter chosen to strengthen God’s faithful and teach them important truths. I ask for the grace of a special power of the will to strive for holiness of life.

 

Steady my resolutions; renew my courage; comfort and console me in the problems, trials and sufferings of daily living, as you consoled our Savior in his agony, Mary in her sorrows, and Joseph in his trials. O loving messenger of the Incarnation, descend upon all those for whom I wish peace and happiness. Spread your wings over the cradles of the new-born babes, O thou who didst announce the coming of the Infant Jesus. Give to the young a lily petal from the virginal scepter in your hand. Cause the Ave Maria to re-echo in all hearts that they may find grace and joy through Mary. Finally, recall the sublime words spoken on the day of the Annunciation — “Nothing is impossible with God,” and repeat them in hours of trial — to all I love — that their confidence in Our Lord may be reanimated, when all human help fails.
