Summorum pontificum — Fifth Anniversary Saturday, Jul 7 2012

Cardinal Burke reflects on Summorum pontificum on its 5th anniversary:  “The Call of Beauty”

Thank you, Holy Father!

Novena to the Holy Ghost through July 8 Wednesday, Jul 4 2012

VENI, Creator Spiritus, mentes tuorum visita, imple superna gratia quae tu creasti pectora.

COME, Holy Ghost, Creator blest, and in our souls take up Thy rest; come with Thy grace and heavenly aid to fill the hearts which Thou hast made.

O comforter, to Thee we cry, O heavenly gift of God Most High, O fount of life and fire of love, and sweet anointing from above.

Tu, septiformis munere, digitus paternae dexterae, Tu rite promissum Patris, sermone ditans guttura.

Thou in Thy sevenfold gifts are known; Thou, finger of God’s hand we own; Thou, promise of the Father, Thou Who dost the tongue with power imbue.

Accende lumen sensibus: infunde amorem cordibus: infirma nostri corporis virtute firmans perpeti.

Kindle our sense from above, and make our hearts overflow with love; with patience firm and virtue high the weakness of our flesh supply.

Hostem repellas longius, pacemque dones protinus: ductore sic te praevio vitemus omne noxium.

Far from us drive the foe we dread, and grant us Thy peace instead; so shall we not, with Thee for guide, turn from the path of life aside.

Per te sciamus da Patrem, noscamus atque Filium; Teque utriusque Spiritum credamus omni tempore.

Oh, may Thy grace on us bestow the Father and the Son to know; and Thee, through endless times confessed, of both the eternal Spirit blest.

Amen.

Now to the Father and the Son, Who rose from death, be glory given, with Thou, O Holy Comforter, henceforth by all in earth and heaven. Amen.

V. Emitte Spiritum tuum, et creabuntur:

R. Et renovabis faciem terrae.

R. Amen.

V. Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be created.

R. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Let us Pray: O God, Who hast taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Ghost: grant that, by the gift of the same Spirit, we may be always truly wise, and ever rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ Our Lord.

R. Amen.

Today in the Oratory… Saturday, Jun 2 2012

Saturday, June 2

Ember Saturday in the Octave of Pentecost

Novena for Corpus Christi continues

Today’s lectionary readings:

A reading from the Epistle to the Romans of St. Paul 5: 1-5

Being justified therefore by faith, let us have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access through faith into this grace wherein we stand: and glory in the hope of the glory of the sons of God. And not only so: but we glory also in tribulation, knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience trial; and trial hope; And hope confoundeth not: because the charity of God is poured forth in our hearts, by the Holy Ghost who is given to us.

A reading from the Gospel of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke 4: 38-44

At ille singulis manus inponens curabat eos.

Quibus ille ait quia:  Et aliis civitatibus oportet me evangelizare regnum Dei: quia ideo missus sum. Et erat praedicans in synagogis Galilaeae

And Jesus rising up out of the synagogue, went into Simon’s house. And Simon’s wife’s mother was taken with a great fever: and they besought him for her. And standing over her, he commanded the fever: and it left her. And immediately rising, she ministered to them.  And when the sun was down, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them to him. But he, laying his hands on every one of them, healed them.  And devils went out from many, crying out and saying: Thou art the son of God. And rebuking them he suffered them not to speak; for they knew that he was Christ.

And when it was day, going out he went into a desert place: and the multitudes sought him, and came unto him. And they stayed him that should not depart from them.

To whom he said: To other cities also I must preach the kingdom of God: for therefore am I sent. And he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.

Novena for Corpus Christi Saturday, Jun 2 2012

Novena for Corpus Christi

O DULCISSIME JESU, qui in hunc mundum venisti, ut omnes animas vita ditares gratiæ tuæ, ad quam in illis servandam simulque fovendam in augustissimo Eucharistiæ Sacramento salutare pharmacum earum infirmitatibus sanandis, et cibum divinum debilitati sustinendæ temetipsum quotidie præbes, te supplices deprecamur, ut super eas sanctum tuum spiritum benignus effundas; quo repletæ, lethali labe si quae sint inquinatæ ad te revertentes, vitam gratiæ deperditam recuperent; quæ vero, te misericorditer largiente, jam tibi adhærent, quotidie, prout cui dabitur, ad tuam coelestem dapem devote accedant, qua roboratæ, venialium culparum a se quotidie admissarum antidotum sibi comparare, vitamque gratiæ tuæ alere valeant, sicque magis magisque emundatæ, sempiternam in coelis beatitudinem consequantur.

Amen.

O SWEETEST JESUS, who came into this world to enrich the souls of all with thy grace, and who, in order to preserve and increase it in them, didst in the most august Sacrament of the Eucharist, give Thyself to be a salutary remedy for our infirmities and divine food to sustain our weakness; we humbly beg of Thee mercifully to pour out upon all men Tthy HOLY SPIRIT, which may enable them, if stained with any mortal guilt, to recover the life of grace lost by sin, and return to Thee; while those who through Thy great mercy are still united with Thee may daily, so far as each may be able, approach Thy heavenly table, where they may find strength, and an antidote for their daily faults, may nourish the life of grace within them, and, being more and more purified, may attain to everlasting happiness in Heaven.

Amen.

Plenary, for every visit, after the fashion of the indulgence of the Portiuncula, made on Corpus CHRISTI, from first Vespers to sunset next day, to a church of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, I, II, III, IV. (See Instructions.) 83 Pius X, Br. July 30, 1906. From the Raccolta.

O SACRUM convivium, in quo Christus sumitur: recolitur memoria passionis eius; mens impletur gratia et futurae gloriae nobis pignus datur.

O SACRED banquet, in which Christ is received, the memory of His Passion is renewed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory given to us.

V. Panem de caelo praestitisti eis;

R. Omne delectamentum in se habentem.

V. Thou didst give them bread from heaven;

R. Containing in itself all sweetness.

Oremus; Deus, qui nobis sub Sacramento mirabili Passionis tuae memoriam reliquisti; tribue, quaesumus, ita nos Corporis et Sanguinis tui sacra mysteria venerari, ut redemptionis tuae fructum in nobis iugiter sentiamus: Qui vivis et regnas in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Let us pray; O God, who under a wonderful Sacrament hast left us a memorial of Thy Passion; grant us, we beseech Thee, so to reverence the sacred mysteries of Thy Body and Blood, that we may ever feel within ourselves the fruit of Thy Redemption: Thou who livest and reignest forever and ever. Amen.

Tempore paschali sequens dicitur oratio: In Paschaltide the following is said:

Oremus; Spiritum nobis, Domine tuae caritatis infunde, ut, quos Sacramentis paschalibus satiasti, tua facias pietate concordes. Per Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum Filium tuum, qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate eiusdem Spiritus Sancti Deus per omnia saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Let us pray; Pour upon us, O Lord, the Spirit of Thy love, to make us of one heart, whom, by Thy tender mercy, Thou hast filled with the paschal sacrament. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who with Thee liveth and reigneth in the unity of the same Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Reading from the Book of the Acts of the Apostles 8: 14-17

Now, when the apostles, who were in Jerusalem, had heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John. Who, when they were come, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Ghost. For he was not as yet come upon any of them: but they were only baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands upon them: and they received the Holy Ghost.

The Holy Gospel of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, according to Saint John 10: 1-10

Amen, amen, I say to you: He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold but climbeth up another way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth: and the sheep hear his voice. And he calleth his own sheep by name and leadeth them out. And when he hath let out his own sheep, he goeth before them: and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice. But a stranger they follow not, but fly from him, because they know not the voice of strangers. This proverb Jesus spoke to them. But they understood not what he spoke.

Veni, Sancte Spiritus

VENI, Sancte Spiritus. Veniat unio Patris, beneplacitum Verbi. Tu, Spiritus veritatis, es praemium sanctorum, refrigerium animarum, lux tenebrarum, pauperum divitiae, amantium thesaurus, esurientium satietas, consolatio peregrinorum; tu denique ille es, in quo omnes thesauri continentur.

COME, O Holy Spirit. Let this pearl of the Father and delight of the Son come. O Spirit of truth, Thou art the reward of the saints, refreshment of souls, light in the darkness, riches of the poor, treasure of lovers, feeder of the hungry, and comfort of wayfarers; indeed Thou art the one in whom all treasures are contained.

Come, Thou who came to Mary so the Word might become flesh and also work in us through grace as Thou worked in her through grace and nature.

Veni, qui es omnis castae cogitationis alimentum, fons omnis clementiae, omnis puritatis cumulus.

Come, Thou who art nourishment of every chaste thought, font of all mercy, and sum total of all purity.

Veni et in nobis absume quicquid impedit ne nos absumamur in te.

Come and consume in us whatever impedes us from being consumed in Thee.

Amen.

Amen.

TE splendor et virtus PATRIS,

Te vita JESU, cordium,

Ab ore qui pendent tuo,

Laudamus inter Angelos,

Tibi mille densa millium

Ducum corona militat:

Sed explicat victor crucem

Michael salutis signifer.

Draconis hic dirum caput

In ima pellit tartara,

Ducemque cum rebellibus

Coelesti ab arce fulminat.

Contra ducem superbiæ

Sequamur hunc nos Principem,

Ut detur ex AGNI throno

Nobis corona gloriæ.

PATRI, simulque FILIO,

Tibi que, SANCTE SPIRITUS,

Sicut fuit, sit jugiter

Sæclum per omne gloria Amen.

Ant. Princeps gloriosissime, Michael Archangele,

esto memor nostri: hic et ubique semper precare

pro nobis FILIUM DEI

V/. In conspectu angelorum psallam tibi, DEUS

meus.

R/. Adorabo ad templum sanctum tuum, et

confitebor nomini tuo

Oremus.

DEUS, qui miro ordine angelorum ministeria,

hominumque dispensas: concede propitius, ut a

quibus tibi ministrantibus in coelo semper

assistitur, ab his in terra vita nostra muniatur. Per

CHRISTUM DOMINUM, etc.

O JESU! life-spring of the soul !

The FATHER’S Power and Glory bright !

Thee with the Angels we extol ;

From Thee they draw their life and light.

Thy thousand, thousand hosts are spread, [

Embattled o’er the azure sky;

But Michael bears thy standard dread,

And lifts the mighty Cross on high.

He in that Sign the rebel powers

Did with their Dragon Prince expel ;

And hurled them from

the Heaven’s high towers,

Down like a thunderbolt to hell.

Grant us with Michael still, O LORD,

Against the Prince of Pride to fight ;

So may a crown be our reward,

Before the LAMB’S pure throne of light.

To GOD the FATHER and the SON,

Who rose from death, all glory be;

With Thee, O blessed PARACLETE,

Henceforth through all eternity. Amen.

Ant. Most glorious Prince, Michael the Archangel,

be mindful of us: pray for us always both here and

everywhere to the SON of GOD.

V/. In the sight of the Angels I will sing psalms to

Thee, O my GOD.

R/. I will adore at thy holy temple, and will confess

to thy name.

Let us pray.

O GOD, who disposest the services of Angels and

men in a wonderful order; mercifully grant that

those who ever stand before Thee, ministering to

Thee in Heaven, may themselves also protect our

life here upon earth. Through CHRIST our LORD.

Amen.

(From the Raccolta, 1910)

Imperat illi Deus; supplices deprecamur: tuque, Princeps militiae coelestis, Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos, qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo, divina virtute in infernum detrude. Amen.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle, be our safeguard and protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

St. Michael Chaplet

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art All Good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, by the help of Thy Grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life.

Ascension to Pentecost Novena Wednesday, May 23 2012

Novena to the Holy Spirit:  Ascension to Pentecost

The Novena (nine days of prayer) was established by Our Lord, Jesus Christ, and given to His Disciples following His Ascension into Heaven

*

And eating together with them, he commanded them, that they should not depart from Jerusalem,

but should wait for the promise of the Father, which you have heard (saith he) by my mouth.

For John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost, not many days hence.

They therefore who were come together, asked him, saying: Lord, wilt thou at this time restore

again the kingdom to Israel? But he said to them: It is not for you to know the times or moments,

which the Father hath put in his own power: But you shall receive the power of the Holy Ghost

coming upon you, and you shall be witnesses unto me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria,

and even to the uttermost part of the earth.

Amen.

Amen.

Today’s lectionary readings:

*

A reading from the Book of Wisdom 5: 1-5

Then shall the just stand with great constancy against those that have afflicted them, and taken away their labours. These seeing it, shall be troubled with terrible fear, and shall be amazed at the suddenness of their unexpected salvation, Saying within themselves, repenting, and groaning for anguish of spirit: These are they, whom we had sometime in derision, and for a parable of reproach. We fools esteemed their life madness, and their end without honour. Behold, how they are numbered among the children of God, and their lot is among the saints.

A reading from the Gospel of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, according to Saint John 15: 1-7

Iam vos mundi estis propter sermonem quem locutus sum vobis.   Manete in me et ego in vobis sicut palmes non potest ferre fructum a semet ipso nisi manserit in vite sic nec vos nisi in me manseritis.  Ego sum vitis vos palmites qui manet in me et ego in eo hic fert fructum multum quia sine me nihil potestis facere.

I am the true vine: and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he will take away: and every one that beareth fruit, he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now you are clean, by reason of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me: and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine: you the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch and shall wither: and they shall gather him up and cast him into the fire: and he burneth. If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will: and it shall be done unto you.

Rosary for the Poor Souls in Purgatory

On the Cross

Domine exaudi vocem meam. Fiant aures tuae intendentes in vocem deprecationis meae. Si iniquitates observabis Domine:

Domine quis sustinebit? Quia apud te propitiatio est; propter legem tuam sustinui te Domine. Sustinuit anima mea in verbum eius: speravit anima mea in Domino. A custodia matutina usque ad noctem speret Israhel in Domino.

Requiescant in pace. Amen.

V. Dómine, exáudi oratiónem meam.

R. Et clamor meus ad te véniat.

Oremus.

O God the Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful, we beseech Thee to grant to the souls of thy servants the remission of their sins, so that by our prayers they may obtain pardon for which they long. O Lord, who livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.

On the Our Father Beads:

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.

The Three Small Beads

Actus Spei

Amen.

Actus Caritatis

Domine Deus, amo te super omnia proximum meum propter te, quia tu es summum, infinitum, et perfectissimum bonum, omni dilectione dignum. In hac caritate vivere et mori statuo. Amen.

On the Hail Mary Beads:

Dulce cor Jesu, sis amor meus.

Maria, Mater Dei et Mater misericordiæ,

ora pro nobis et pro mortuis.

At the end

Cor Jesu, flagrans amore nostri, inflamma cor nostrum amore tui.

Domina nostra, Sancta Dei Genetrix, intercede pro nobis.

Alme Sancte Joseph, dux noster, nos et sanctam Ecclesiam protege.

(Prayer of St. Gertrude)

English translation

Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord:

Lord hear my voice. Let thy ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication. If Thou, O Lord wilt mark iniquities; Lord who shall stand it? For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness: and by reason of Thy law, I have waited for Thee, O Lord. My soul hath relied on His word: my soul hath hoped in the Lord. From the morning-watch even until night, let Israel hope in the Lord. Because with the Lord there is mercy: and with Him plentiful redemption. And He shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Eternal rest give unto them. O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. From the gate of hell, deliver their souls, O Lord. May they rest in peace. Amen.

O Lord, hear my prayer.

And let my cry come unto Thee.

Let us Pray:

O God the Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful, we beseech Thee to grant to the souls of thy servants the remission of their sins, so that by our prayers they may obtain pardon for which they long. O Lord, who livest and reignest, world without end. Amen. May they rest in peace. Amen.

On the Our Father Beads:

Eternal rest give to them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them.

The Three Small Beads

Act of Faith

O my God, I firmly believe that Thou art one God in three divine persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; I believe that Thy divine Son became man and died for our sins, and that He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the holy Catholic Church teaches, because Thou hast revealed them, Who canst neither deceive nor be deceived. Amen

Act of Hope

O my God, relying on Thy almighty power and infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon for my sins, the help of Thy grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen.

Act of Charity

O my God, I love Thee above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because Thou art all-good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured. Amen.

On the Hail Mary Beads

Sweet Heart of Jesus, be my love.

Mary, Mother of God and Mother of mercy, pray for us, and for the departed.

At the end

Heart of Jesus, burning with love of us, inflame our hearts with love of Thee.

Our Lady, Holy Mother of God, intercede for us.

Foster-father St. Joseph, our guide, protect us and the holy Church.

(Prayer of St. Gertrude)

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the Universal Church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen. Oh, divine heart of Jesus, convert sinners, save the dying, set free the holy souls in Purgatory.

Devotion to the Holy Spirit

O Creator Sancte Spiritus, adesto propitius Ecclesiae catholicae eamque contra inimicorum incursus tua superna virtute robora et confirma, tuacaritate et gratia spiritum famulorum tuorum, quos unxisti, renova, ut in te clarificent Patrem Filiumque eius Unigenitum Iesum Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

O Holy Spirit, Creator, mercifully assist Thy Catholic Church, and by Thy heavenly power strengthen and establish her against the assaults of all her enemies; and by Thy love and grace renew the spirit of Thy servants whom Thou hast anointed, that in Thee they may glorify the Father and His only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Fast day of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr

(1030-1079)

Patron Saint of Poland

Biographical information about of St. Stanislaus is scant, but what is known is similar to the history of the conflict between Church and State that led to the martyrdom of St. Thomas Beckett.  As Bishop of Krakow, St. Stanislaus became unpopular with King Boleslaw II, after the saint publicly rebuked the monarch’s immoral life and behavior.  For excommunicating Boleslaw, St. Stanislaus was murdered during the sacrifice of the mass.

V. Dómine, + lábia mea apéries.

R. Et os meum annuntiábit laudem tuam.
